Back at it

Hey everyone, long time no post.  So for those of you that don’t keep up with my podcast, Geeks in Running Shoes, I am still running.  In fact, I’m less than 48 hours away from my second half marathon.  My cohost/brother-in-law, Raymond and I will be running the St. Louis Frostbite Half Marathon.  True to the name, it will be wicked cold on Saturday, not to mention the 8-12″ of snow on the ground in St. Louis right now.  Why do a half marathon in the winter in the midwest?  Good fricking question!  Saturday is not only the race, but also my 30th birthday!  Woohoo!  So my plan is to run the race at 9am, be at McGurk’s Irish Pub at noon, nap by 2pm, and start partying around 6pm.  We shall see how that works out.

I’m going to try to be more active on my blog again.  I think that it really helped me stay honest with my eating habits and running.  Frankly, the reason I stopped blogging so much is because the podcast was a weekly outlet to talk about my life.  That helps (somewhat) with keeping me honest with my running, but I need to get back on the wagon with my healthy eating.  The last few weeks I have been doing better, but I’m still up in weight since my last half marathon in September.  My race weight was 192.  Currently, I’m hovering around 202-205, which I don’t think is horrible.  I can do better, though.  So, I’m just trying to make the best choices nutrition-wise during the day.  I’m really going to try to blog more often, so hopefully, you guys will come along on the continuation of my journey.

Sick Sick Sick

So, training has been pretty scant for the past week. It all kind of started with the intense heat in the MidWest. 100+ heat index on multiple days is not exactly conducive to outside activity. So, come Thursday, I start really feeling the effects of the long work days into the heat. After a work dinner, I come home to feel a headache starting. My temperature at this point was just under 100. Contributed it to the heat and went to bed.
Woke up Friday morning, did a couple hours of work. By 9:30am, I knew that I was done for the day. Called the boss, drove home, and went to bed. That’s when the intense headache, piercing eye pressure, and body aches started. By the afternoon, the vomiting commenced. That was my life for the entire weekend. Only now, Sunday night at 11:30pm, do I feel well enough for jumping online. Over the weekend, I lost 6 pounds due to the fact that solid food (or even water) would stay in my stomach. Needless to say, I did not run at all this weekend. In fact, I did not get out of bed longer than 10-15 minutes. For the most part, I didn’t feel good enough to watch television. Hopefully, the worst is behind me, and I can get back to training this week. A little over a month until the half marathon. Time’s a running out.

Hey everyone, long time no see. I’m back to running! Thanks to a little help with my running form from Coach Jeff of PRS Fit, I’m back in action. It’s been slowing building my endurance back up. Saturday I did 3 miles in 36 minutes and this morning I did 2.5 miles in 30. Slow going, I know, but it’s a start. The half marathon is about 7 weeks away, so if I can increase my weekend runs by 1 mile per week, I should be able to get my mileage in. To say that I’m not a little worried would be lying.

Another big news item I have is my podcast! We have one episode currently available for download. We recorded last night, but, unfortunately, we have been plagued with audio problems. The end of the first podcast is a bit distorted, but we are working on it. The whole second podcast was that way, so we are looking to re-record the whole thing tonight. This weekend was a rough nutrition weekend. BBQ’s and lots of work led to less than ideal dinners. I could feel it in my run this morning. But, what are you going to do? I could just stop altogether, or try to do better this week. I think I’ll do that latter.

Back in Black

Well it’s been a week since I checked in with everyone. I’m been in kind of a funk and falling back into old eating habits mainly due to long work hours. Not trying to make excuses, just laying out the facts. My weight has climbed from 197 to 203-204 area. I believe that I’m carrying some extra water weight in there. Running has been sporadic, working out even more so. But, it’s never too late to turn around. Tonight, I start anew. Tonight I run 2-3 miles and start P90X. I’d like to run the half marathon at 190, so I have two months to get to that point. So, I’m going to do it.

I have acquired a new (to me) bike. It’s a 2006 Specialized Sirrus Sport. It needs a little work, but I think it’s going to work out nicely for me. I have to get some dérailleur issues taken care of before any long rides.

The first episode of the podcast is in post-production of sorts right now. The last five minutes of my podcast cherry pop had some audio issues, so I’ll have to re-record that part with my cohost. As soon as its ready to go, I’ll let everyone know. We are definitely looking for some constructive feedback.

So today was a busy day. The last day of my three day weekend off work (which doesn’t happen very often). First off, we got out the door early and met some friends at the St. Louis Zoo. Everyone around here knows how nice our zoo is, but for those of you not from the Midwest, do check it out if you are driving through! Free admission and almost everything is free there. We packed a nice picnic lunch that we ate in Forest Park, then walked around the zoo a little longer. Came home and enjoyed a short nap with my son.

Following the short siesta, we ate some dinner and bathed the smelly children. Caught up on some email and got a message from Allan Gyorke of Parked Thoughts / Running with the Pack Podcast letting me know that I got a mention in his current podcast. Definitely cool! Made my Monday, that’s for sure! He offered me his Vibram Five Fingers, but my Flintstone feet are too big for them. Looking for a way to shorten toes…. That got me in the mood for some exercise. Broke out the P90X set and threw in the Cardio X disc. Wow. It didn’t seem very hard at first, but 45 minutes of yoga, plyometrics, and cardio is definitely sweat-inducing. I’m looking forward to trying out all of the routines in the set. Unfortunately, by the time the workout was over, I was in the midst of the complete breakdown of three children – too busy of a weekend for them. My wife was down the street doing some 30 Day Shred with a friend. So, I consoled the best I could until her return.

Wife home – situation under control. Still had some energy left to burn. So, quick bike ride (5.5 miles of small hills) followed by a brisk half mile jog to check on my calf. Interestingly, I found a way to run without the calf pain. If I run in a sprint position (i.e. completely forefoot instead of my normal midfoot strike), there is no pain in my calf. Unfortunately, I do not have the control of my speed while running like that. I run too fast and burn out quickly. Of course, the 45 minutes of P90X and bike ride prior to the jog might have zapped some energy as well. I’m definitely looking forward to trying a brisk run tomorrow morning with a forefoot strike to see if that’s the answer I’ve been searching for.

Well, I promised everyone some big news. I will be starting a podcast with my brother-in-law about running, fitness, weight loss, and our journey towards running the half marathon in Chicago this year, and, hopefully, a full marathon next year. I was hoping to have one episode already recorded by tonight, but our schedules just did not allow for it. So, we will hopefully have an episode recorded this week and ready for download by this weekend. We are going to try to make it a weekly thing were we check in on our progress for the week, then he talks about gadgets/iPhone apps/technology dealing with fitness, then I talk about books, documentaries, podcasts, etc. I will definitely let everyone know when it’s ready for download.

Two things happened in the past 24 hours. First, I borrowed a friend’s “P90x” workout DVD set. I’m looking to start this up tomorrow morning. I wanted to start it today, but I just didn’t have the time (not to mention I kind of ate crappy most of the day). I’m looking forward to the challenge of it. I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback about it. So, let’s see if I can take my transformation up a notch.

Second, I got home from my aunt’s BBQ (which I didn’t eat great, but not horrible), I went for a nice, hour long, 12-mile bike ride. For those in Belleville, I rode from my house by Denny’s to East End Park, then followed the Metrolink bike trail to SWIC. Then, came back home on the bike trail, but went through the old McClintock neighborhood. It was a nice ride, hoping to get back to running within a week.

Well, I think it’s time for some before and after pics. Just got done with a 5.5 mile bike ride while towing my two girls and level 1 of Jillian’s 30 Day Shred. I’m beat. I decided that I need to take an updated photo to show off my hard work. Currently, I’m holding strong at 199. Here’s the before. This was taken at the Daddy-Daughter Dance on February 6, 2010. I was 252 pounds.

I’m happy with the progress so far in these 4 and a half months.

As far as running goes, I’m still on hold. Soleus muscle is still bothering me. So, I’m trying to keep up my cardio with cycling and 30 Day Shred. Hope to get back to running asap. We shall see.

Also, on a side note, I will have some big news coming next week! Stay tuned! And please, if you enjoy my ramblings, suggest my site to your friends. My current high is 42 unique visitors in one day. Let’s see if we can get higher than that!
